THE CLARENCE BRIDGE.
(By Thlegraph.) (from our own correspondent). Kaikoura, Dec. 21. At the meeting of residents held last evening to take steps to celebrate the opening of the Clarence Bridge a large and influential committee was formed. It was decided to consult the conveuienee of Mr Dodson and Mr Lance before fixing the date. Messrs Blackie and Malcolm suggested tbe 4th of January This was deemed too anon after the holidays and giving insufficient time to invite the attendance of the leading r-sidents of B'enheim and the South. The Committee suggest the 13th proximo, but the determination of the date awaits the replies of the members for Wairau and Cheviot, Considerable' interest is being taken in the matter here and strenuous efforts will be made to render the opening of the bridge a great success. Mr Gibson last night warmly extol'ed the member for Wairau, ascribing to him the lion’s share of credit for the construction of the bridge being undertaken.
