Pure Cubsbdnbss. —Very recently the Footscray (Vic.) Council —perhaps in the hope of their own individual turns Coming in due time—generously voted the Mayor an annual allowance of 2|- per conk, on tho grossrevenue of the borough. This arrangement is full of promise for the promot-rs. At the present moment a 2\ percentage amounts to £250 annually—in'a few years* time it would amount to five times as much Out of pure cussedoess, however, 69 ratef layers signed a petition, requesting that ucky dawg, tho Mayor, to call a public meeting to disgus3 his good fortian. He was amazed. He laid the petition before his brother councillors. They were amazed. The idea of ratepayers presuming te question the private jobs of the mystic circle was altogether ridiculous. Mr Mayor-was advised to treat the application of those outside “ nonentities ” with contempt. A meeting was held, awful resoluiions were passed, and it looks as though the 2k per shent scheme will fall through. The eye of every Mayor in Victoria has been anxiously fixed upon Footscray, and now those eyes are filling with bitter, b itter tears.

Exhumation or Captain Cain’s B^dy.—The Ashburton Mail s»ys:—Now that so much ha* been officially permitted to tanspire, - there seems no object to be gained in withholding from the public any particulars of the ease. We may, therefore, mention that it has reached us that when the prisoner Hall was informed jn goal that the Government had authorised the disinterment of the late Captain Cain he was greatly agitated, bo much so that medical advice had to be resor'ed to, and morphia was administered to steady his nerves We draw no conclusion from tho fact, if fact it be, a* wo believe it is, and the agitation of the prisoner may, of been course, have attributable to his being shocked at the idea of the exhumation, as much as the suspscions which led to its being permitted, but that he was greatly agitated we are credibly assured. We also learn, with regard to the exhumation iteclf tbut the body of the late Captain Cain proved tq be in wonderful preservation, the features perfect, thopgh somewhat swollen, and the internal organs almost as fresh-looking as if the burial had only taken place a few days prior to the re? opening of the grave; and as the properties of antimony are, we understand, preservative, its presence in considers!) e quautity doubtless had some thing to do with the arresting of the process of natural decay.
