If the teams meet the game should be a closely contested onei ,

Mariyb jß'iPQii County Fund Under section 31 of 1 The Finance Arrangements Act, 1876,” Mr Wm. Douslin has been appointed the Commissioner to allocate the County fund in proportionate parts, • o e ,ch road district, or outlying district, for 4 the years eod ng 30th June, ISBG, and 30th Ju ie, 1887. . . _ Art Union.—The drawing: in Mr C. J. W. Griffiths’ art union will take place this ev ning at the auction mart, It is hoped 'hat as many subscribers as possib e will put in an appearance. We believe that all the tickets but five have been disposed of; and these will probably be sold to-.lay. Model Fountain. Mr Grant, of High street, has just finished a nice model fountain on a novel plan. We dou’cjprof, gg to understand the scientific principles which govern the fountain, but we miy say that it has been put together in a workmanlike manner, and that a nice and g i e idy spray of water is thrown. The fountain seems, like hll good things of the kind, to be of simple and inexpensive construction, and would be nice verandah, hothouse or garden ornament. Wool Ship for Marlborough.— Messrs Fell Bros, and Co., agents for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, inform us that the Company Ins arranged to place a ship on the berth at Pic on for London. The vessel which, we understand, will be the first wool-ship ever loaded at Picton, is the Helen Denny, a c'ipper of 700 tons. She will arrive at Picton early in December, and, with the promises of support given by intending shippers, it is probable she will ba a full ship early in January. A. and P. Association. —It has been decided to hold the Annual Show, in connection with this useful Society, at the Association’s Grounds, Maxwell Road, on Wednesday, 24th November. The Comm'ttee will meet at the Club Ilot-.l on Saturday week, 18th inst, to draw up the schedule and prize list. The latter, we believe will be an exceedingly tempting one. We wish the Society all success. Such a deserving organisation is worthy of the hearty support of both town and cou dry. The Soul or Business —The Hastings Evening Star offers the Napier press the following excellent advice:—“ Day after day the Napier Press wail and howl about the doings of the Salvation Army If they had only sense enough to let the army alone it would have died out long ago. But they must keep advertising it on the cheap, with the result that it flourishes more and more every dav. Advertising is the soul of business.” The Agent Generalship. llio London correspondent of the Auckland Star 8U« > rests Dr Buller :u a fit successor to Sir F. Dillon Bell as Agent-General, an 1 adds that the suggestion has met with very general acceptance in powerful quarters and that he should not indeed be surprised if considerable influence were brougk' to bear to bring about this appointment. The official quarters, like the correspondent, must be very badly informed regarding the estimation in which Dr. Bui ler is held in hew Zealand to imagine that such a preposterous appointmnnt would be thought of for a moment. Dr. Buller has never yet been able to secure even a seat in the House of Representatives. Readers will be pleased to learn that our Clearing Sale will be continued during August.
