At a meeting of the Auckland Benevolent Society It was decided to resuscitate it, and commence operations to relieve the distress Dunedin, July 26. There was a large attendance at the funeral of Mr John Hyde Harrie, which as deceased had been Provincial Grand Master, was a Masonic one Thirty-five of the unemployed will be given work on the Otago Central Works. THE GREAT BARRIER Auckland, July 27 The pursuit of the two men supposed to be Caffrey and Penn continues. Eight policemen on foot disguised, and two newspaper report! rs mounted, are scouring the Waitakerei Ranges,but they never sighted the men yesterday. The police reached a settler’s house just an hour and a half after the suspects, but the trace was again lost. From suspicion of their movements and positive identification by settlers, the police are confident these are the murderers. ASSISTING SUFFERERS By THE ERUPTION. Wellington, July 26. The Government have received telegrams from the Hawke’s Bay and Bay of Plenty Districts to the effect that the natives are collecting goods for the Tarawera sufferers, and that from the former district it is expectel 30 tous will be sent. The natives on the West Coast of this Island are said to be making efforts to send assistance to those in need. ARREST OF EIGHT MAORIS. Manaia, July 25. Sergt Anderson and Constable Franklyn arrested eight natives to-day on a charge of stealing pigs from the property of Walter Stoddard in the bush nbout six miles from Manaia. None of the prisoners have made any reference to Te Wliiti or Titokowaru, The natives had sheath knives and a gun, but offered no resis. tance when arrested The police will apply for a remand until Thursday. July 27.
Eight natives charged with pig stealing were bronght up to day. As it appeared from the evidence that seven of them were acting under the direction of the eighth, they were discharged with a warning, and the rinaleader was sentence! to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
