A BRIGANTINE ASHORE.

Nelson, July 7. The Collector of Customs received a telegram from Colliogwood this afternoon from Capt. Bowden, master of the brigantine Helena, stating that his vessel went ashore on Capt Farewell Spit on Sunday night, and was abandoned at noon yesterday. From later intelligence it appears that the brigantine was bound from Wanganui to Melbourne with a cargo of timber, and ran on to the Spit on Sunday night, when the weather was very thick and it was blowing hard from the south-east. The captain and crew of six remained on board till noon on Monday, when they took to the boats and with difficulty reached the Pakawau. It is said the Spit light was not seen till two minutes before the ve?sel struck. When abandoned she had not commenced to break up.
