SHOW SIDELIGHTS

Sheep Dog Trials. The sheep dog trials, which were held in the middle of the day, created a great deal of interest among spectators. Per medium of the loud speaker, silence was asked for while the trial were in progress, and the crowd responded well. There was an excellent’ entry, including some wellknown and experienced trial dogs from other centres. Some very fine performances were given by man and dog, and when the three sheep were finally penned by the successful. owners, the crowd accorded' them -generous rounds, of applause. The highlight of the trials was undoubtedly the fact that a local owner, Mr. E.. Johnson, of Wiltsdown, with his dog Mac, defeated two well-known trial dogs in Mr. P. McNaughton’s Nell and Mr. Norman Clifford's Key.

Record at Show. With the large number of Waikato A. and ;P. annual shows which are now held, it is unusual to find stock exhibitors taking the trouble to show at more than three or four. There was one exhibitor at the Putaruru show, however, who had stock in the dairy cattle section who for the past six weeks or more has been showing stock every week-end at different centres. When the amount of work that has to be carried out to groom and transport stock is taken into account, the measure of such an exhibitor's keenness can be realised.

A Family Record. The unusual record of every- member of a family of four competing in some event at the show was achieved by Mr. and Mrs. J. R. O. Lochhead and family. Mr. and Mrs. Lochr head both rode in the various hack events, while Russell and Rod Lochhead were competitors in the Juvenile riding classes. Band Selections. A much-appreciated feature was the performance of the Putaruru Citizens’ Band, augmented by players from the Matamata and Cambridge bands. The band played items throughout the day.
