HINUERA DAIRY COMPANY
MANAGER’S REPORT In his annual report Mr. W. L. Hollis, manager, congratulated suppliers to the Hinuera Dairy Company on the fine class of cream sent in during the past season. Any trouble was largely caused by feed flavours resulting from the excellent growth of grass during the season.
There were still a few cases in which more care could be taken in cooling the cream and cleaning the cans. To complete the system for the production of good quality cream it was essential that cans and lids be thoroughly washed and scalded as soon as possible after receipt from the factory. That this was not always done was proved by occasional previous day’s cream dockets being found in the cream. For the coming Season the directors had decided to instal a can-washing machine, and this should help considerably. Nevertheless, the foregoing remarks in re- . gard to scalding the cans on the farm would still apply. As was usual cream tests had dropped during the winter months, due possibily to the addition of hot water to the milk, before separating. When this was done the separator screw should be adjusted to counter-act the addition of water and thereby avoiding the possibility of reducing the test to under 35 per cent, butterfat, for which there was a penalty of Id per lb. After separation, the cream should be. covered in such a way to allow, gases to.escape, but tp prevent the entry of rats and mice. With the present labour laws time meant money in the operation of the factory, and suppliers could help -in a large measure to reduce the extra cost to a minimum by having their cream out ready for collection by the carrier at the specified time. Five minutes wait for each supplier’s cream amounted to a lot in a day’s, run. Suppliers could assist by getv, ting their cream out promptly, pafyt ticularly on Sundays and for which double time was p#d, y ; It was pleasing to “mention feeling existing between directors, aiid'-the 'staff, ’as in his opibioh this excellent team-work wqs in no Small measure the reason why the factory was one of the foremost in New Zealand.
The report was very cordially received by those present.
