FARM LABOUR
REASON FOR SHORTAGE Opportunities For Youths That shortage of farm labour had resulted in hundreds of dairy farmers changing over to sheep, was an opinion expressed by Mr. J. E. West in his annual address to suppliers of the Hinuera Dairy Company. Mr. West said that high wages on Public Works attracted youths from the farm. A great deal of harm was done by those who talked and wrote about the bad conditions on farms and the drudgery of farm life. Conditions were certainly bad in some cases, but the majority of employees enjoyed exactly the same privileges as the employer’s own family. Opportunities for getting on were as good as ever, but unless a youth made up his mind to deny himself for a few years of a few luxuries and tried to learn the business of farming he could never expect to get ahead. The most successful farmers in the Waikato to-day were men who started with a few shillings in their pockets, and if young fellows would only ‘work as these men had done there was no reason why in a few years they should not be in a good position.
