MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL

DECEMBER MEETING Only a small amount of business came before the Matamata County Council at its December meeting on Friday, when the chairman, Mr. J. W. Anderson, presided over Crs. J, Bruce, K. S. Cox, P. R. Hawke, G. A. Pearce, A. Wallace and E. D. White. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. P. Dee and E. Nickle. State of Hildreth’s Road The attention of the council was drawn by a settler to the bad state of the far end of Hildreth’s road. This was stated to be unfit for use by cream lorries, and products had to be sledged for a considerable distance. It had not been graded for over 20 years and the settler thought he was entitled to a fine weather road dt least.

The engineer agreed that the far end had not been graded for a long time.

Cr. White said work on part of this road was already planned, and that this request should be granted also.

Cr. Pearce stated that grading and metalling " would be cheap there, metal being available close by. The engineer said the cost of metalling would be about £3 per chain. He recommended that grading be done shortly, but that metalling be left till early next year, so that the cost would fall into next year’s accounts.

Cr. Pearce agreed to this, and the chairman moved that Cr. Pearce 1 and the engineer make arrangements for grading. Cr. Hawke suggested that gravelling in the autumn be included in the motion, and this was done. / Timber Line Commission.

The engineer’s' report-stated that a commission of inquiry set up by the Government to report upon an application by the Taupo Totara Timber Company for amendments to their Orders-in-Council and other relevant matters heard evidence and arguments last week. Submissions on behalf of the Council were prepared after consulting with Tokoroa residents, and these were supported by witnesses.

The actions of Cr. Cox. and the engineer in this matter were ratified. Cr. Cox and the engineer were appointed by the council some years ago to deal with this problem.
