MATAMATA RESULTS

Seniors Hinuera 18, Wardville 9. Patetere defaulted to Matamata. Third Grade Walton 6, Matarnata 0. In a ragged and uninteresting game, for the most part ol incident, Hinuera ran up an 18 to 9 score against Wardville on No. 1 ground. Co-ordinated back movements were few, and those few mostly came when Hinuera backs flashed from rugged rucking play into scoring movements. For the greater part the game was a series of forward tussles, with honours fairly evenly distributed territorially. HINUERA 18, WARDVILLE 9 The teams were:— Wardville —Newson; R. Hughes, S. Lynch, J. Hayward; A. Hughes, Hawthorn; Sharpe; W. Robinson, Johns, Ingley, Munro, Robinson, Smith, Franich, Carrol. — Gillies; Germann, Swap, Lowry; Hawke, Settle; Brown; Taylor, McLeay, Brown, Wright, Johns, Cannell, Lennon, 1 West. ’ - - ' ,;: MKKtrmuf* H m’eezb and from ragged forplay, the ball went out on the Wardville 25. An attempt at goal by Hawke failed. Hinuera lost two successive opportunities through knocks-on. Following periods of up and down play, with both sets of __—forwards chasing the ball eagerly, the ball came from Hawke to Settle to Hughes, who kicked into Wavdville’s quarter, Newson saving in great style and finding the line past the 25. Play swung up and down

I field, until Hawke secured just outside I-linuera’s half and sold a dummy to run through the opposition and open the score. Hawke’s kick failed. Hinuera 3, Wardville 0. From a scrum shortly afterwards Settle sent out to Germann, who was stopped within 10 yards of the line by Newson. Following a scrum Hawke broke away but held on too long, and Hayward relieved pressure with a kick to the line just outside Wardville’s 25. Lowry made a determined run, beating several men before being grassed close to the line, and Wardville forced. From the kick play drifted backward and forward on Wardville’s 25, Lowry securing from a scrum and going over, Hawke converting with a good kick. Hinuera 8, Wardville 0. Wardville took a turn on determined attack, but a ragged effort broke down. Up and down play, with loose, hard rucking, kept play between the half and Wardville’s 25 until Hughes found the line near Hinuera’s 25, where from a scrum the ball was kicked well down field to Newson, who ran well up among the opposition and grubber-kicked to Hinuera’s 25, Wardville took the territorial advantage for a spell, but Settle secured and raced on his own to Wardville’s quarter, losing possession in failing to sell a dummy, and the ball went out inside Wardville’s quarter. From the lineout the ball went across to Germann, who raced over wide out, Hawke converting, Hinuera 13, Wardville 0.

Half-time came at that score. Wardville forwards attacked hard from the kick, Hayward breaking away to be tackled on J.Tinuera’s 25 with no one' in support. From a scrum penalty Hughes raised the flags for Wardville’s first points. Wardville 3, Hinuera 13

Ragged play drifted up and down field, forwards dominating the play. From the half line Settle took the ball through the opposition at his toe and scored near the posts, Hawke converting. Hinuera 18, Wardville 3. The remainder of the game was dull. Wardville attacked hard but raggedly, Lynch finally kicking a penalty to make the score: Wardville 6, Hinuera 18. taking another turn on attack, Wardville secured from a lineout on the Hinuera 25 and Johns fought his way over, the kick failing. Wardville 9, Hinuera 18. Time found the scores unchanged. Mr. W. Quigg was referee. PATETERE DEFAULTS Unable to field a team, Patetere defaulted to Matarnata in the game set down for No. 2 ground. THIRD GRADE Walton 6, Matarnata 0 In the curtain-raiser on No. 1 ground, Walton thirds defeated Matamata by six points to nil. For Walton, Peckham scored a try and Adams kicked a penalty. Mr. T. J. Sweeney was referee.

JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES Matarnata 18, Waipa 11 Matarnata junior representatives travelled to Te Awamutu on Saturday and defeated Waipa juniors by 18 points to 11 in the semi-final of the Clarke Cup competition. The final will be played with Morrinsville juniors, who had a bye. Previously Matarnata had defeated Putarui'u, Waipa had won from ■Cambridge and Morrinsville had beaten Taupiri. Matamata’s points came from two tries by J. Mclean, both of which were converted by M. Roberts, who also kicked two field goals. FIRST PEACE CUP GAME Morrinsville 40, Paeroa 0 Defending the Peace Cup against the first challengers of the season, Morrinsville senior representatives had a runaway win over Paeroa by 40 points to 0. Morrinsville’s points came from tries by Vivian (3), Bodmin (2), Aitken, Vowles and Kelly. Two tries were converted by W. Cameron and two by Aitken, who also kicked two field goals. As the Paeroa team had recently I been beaten by Thames by 32—3, its supporters were hardly surprised at the score put up by Morrinsville, holders of both the Peace and Finlay Cups. In marked contrast to the recent game with Matarnata, the Morrinsville team was not extended. Weak tackling by the Paeroa backs encouraged the Morrinsville backs to go for tries when they might have passed out with advantage. As a result the game did not produce attractive back play, nor did it give the Morrinsville backs good practice for the final game for the Finlay Cup against Taupiri next Saturday. Fresh from their games with the touring Waikato team, J. Leeson, Russell and Aitken all shone out in individual efforts. The Morrinsville forwards had the advantage of playing against seven men, as the heaviest of the Paeroa forwards was out of condition and was practically a passenger. The teams were as follows: — Paeroa. —L. Fisher; W. Morrison, M. Harrison, W. G. Clotworthy, L. Masters; H. Robinson; M. Charlesworth, J. Bell, M. Fitzgerald, B. Sutherland, E. Johnson, F. Barber, L. Carrick, G. Laverick. Morrinsville. A. Cameron; R. Vivian, A. J. Aitken, R. Clarkin; W. Cameron, M. Bodmin; L. Russell; O. Vowles, G. Faulkner, T. Wilton, T. Clarkin, G. Muir, M. Lewer, E. Leeson, J. Leeson. Referee: Mr. E. Thorpe (Hamilton). 1
