DANGEROUS LEVEL CROSSINGS In his admirably enthusiastic determination to reduce the toll of the road the Minister for Transport will be compelled by recent fatalities, which have added to the already distressing total for this year, to give even more earnest attention to the improvement of level crossings throughout the country. There have been fatal level crossing accidents on successive days, and there was another last week in Christchurch. Admittedly the Government is aware of the need for eliminating the most dangerous crossings, and the. Minister for Transport, in an address broadcast last month, announced that the Government intended to spend £150,000 on level crossings this year, and had in hand an ambitious plan for building overhead bridges. Since these crossings can be a menace to ordinarily careful drivers momentarily off then guard, it is essential that the maxP mum of protection should be provided. The Government is doing some useful work, but in this matter there is urgent need for speed. It is one of the most useful works that can be done, for as Mr. Semple would admit, money need not be considered when the lives of useful citizens are at stake.—Press (Christchurch).
