MATAMATA JERSEY CLUB

! ANNUAL MEETING HELD t <-Officers Elected Held on Tuesday night, the annual meeting of the Matamata Jersey ’Club drew a good attendance" of enthusiastic members in spite of the inclement weather. Mr. H. Lewis was in the chair. , Annual Report Traversing the activities of a very successful year, the chairman’s annual report stated that members’ ■subscriptions reached k record .figure, and new members had come fort ward and were making great progress with the breed; a most encouraging feature. The. club’s annual bull sale had been spoilt by atrocious weather, which had affected the attendance of buyers and thus had reduced the club’s percentage. Agitation for Pavilion As a direct outcome of the conditions at the sale the club had appointed delegates to confer with the local branch of the Farmers’ Union With a . view to getting the auctioneering firms to erect a permanent selling pavilion at the saleyards. A petition bearing some 200 signatures been forwarded to the auctioneers, but it was some months before the club so . much as received a reply, and the request was to all intents and purposes politely refused. The club had - decided at a later meeting to carry on as usual in the meantime, but the matter would have to come under consideration again when the incoming executive had been appointed. Great Show . Success The Jubilee Show was fully subsidised and was a great success from the Jersey point of view as well as in all other directions. The 'aged bull and cow classes 'were easily the best ever paraded in the district, and classes all through were very strong. The first show of the Putaruru A. and P. Association was aljo _ subsidised by the slub to the extent of £lo* and was another success. -

Large - Show Subsidies Owing to the large amount - paid in subsidies to A. and P. associations, the report ' continued; the credit balance is lower than usual, but I would take the liberty to remind club members that the club is in existence to further the interests V of the Jersey breed, and no doubt members will agree that the money has been wisely spent. Congratulations to Members Members will all join in congratulations to Colson Bros, in winning the points cup at the local show; and also Mr. Williams in winning the club’s cup for pair of yearling heifers. We also have to congratulate Mr. Robinson on winning the cup for the highest C.O.R. record for the year with 7541 b of fat, put up in a season during which we experienced the worst drought for many years. “ Make Dominion Foremost ” The demand for best Jersey cattle -.is still very strong, and there is no •<loubt that breeders in this country tihave it in their power to make the

Dominion one of the foremost countries in the world for the breeding of high-class Jersey stock. We are favoured with a natural dairying climate where the housing of cattle is almost unheard of and where we have practically a continuous grassgrowing season. In only remains for progressive breeders, to grasp the opportunity. “In concluding, I would like to thank members of the club for their loyal co-operation and support during the past year.” The report was adopted. Balance-sheet The balance-sheet, showing a credit of £lO 6s 4d, was adopted. Subscriptions for the year were set down at £22 10s, while expenditure included £53 Is 8d for show subsidies, £7 7s 6d for cups and 8s 9d for ribbons. Election of Officers In vacating the chair the retiring president, Mr. H. Lewis, voiced his thanks to members for the way in which they had pulled together, but expressed the hope that the club would elect a new president for new blood might make a lot of difference. ' Members refused to entertain the ' suggestion, and,.Mr. Lewis was reelected for his tenth term. Hon. Secretary: Mr. M. E. Gould, re-elected with acclamation. Hon. Treasurer. —Mr. P. Catchpole (re-elected). It was decided to send Mr. Catchpole a letter of appreciation. „ T T>~ Vice-presidents. —Messrs. S. J. Robinson, W. Alears, J. F. Vosper and J. E. Barker. Executive Committee. —Messrs. E. M. Peffers, J. H. Williams, A. E. Brooks, F. C. Richmond arid Brigadier Fitness.
