THE FIJI ISLANDS
SINGAPORE OF SOUTH PACIFIC It has been said that Fiji is destined to 'be the “Singapore of the SouthPacific.” Situated 1700 miles northeast of Sydney and 1100 miles north of Auckland, Fiji is at “the cross roads of the South Pacific.” Tonga is 180 miles to the south-east and Samoa 500 miles to the north-east. The colony, which is administered by the Colonial Office, London, through a Governor, comprises about 250 islands, ranging from Vita Levu (4053 square miles) to small rocks. About 80 of the islands are inhabited. Vanua Levu is next in size to Vita Levu, having an area of 2128 square miles. The next largest island is only 166 square miles. Suva, the capital of the Fiji Islands, has a population of about 13,000. The total population is about 200,000, of whom about 4800 are Europeans, 100,000 Fijians, and 83,000 Indians. The native population of Fiji, after setbacks, is on the increase. Government is exercised by an Exe- ! cutive Council, consisting of the Governor and five official members and two unofficial members, and a Legislative Council consisting of 13 nominated, six elected European, three elected Fijian and three elected Indian members.
