PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL

JUNE MEETING j I The Piako County Council met on | Monday, Mr. W. C. Kennedy (chairman, Waihou) presiding over Crs. D. J. Burgess (Te Aroha), D. Johnson (Waitoa), W. R. Lowry (Kiwitahi), W. McLean (Walton), W. F. Stark (Morrinsville), A. Orr (Manawaru) and J. M. Stewart (Tahuna). Tenders for Metal The chairman reported that three tenders had been received for the supply of 2400 yards of- metal from the Gordon quarry. However, one tenderer had since asked leave to withdraw. This left the tenders of W. S. Goosman and Co., Ltd., at 5s 9d per yard, and of F. Montague at 5s lid. The chairman moved that the contract be for two years, and that half the work be given to each tenderer. , This was seconded by Cr. Orr. Cr. Johnson moved that the lowest tender be accepted, provided the metal was crushed at Gordon. Cr. Lowry seconded this, and said the chairman’s motion was out of order. Tenders had been called and the council could not alter the conditions of tender. The chairman replied that owing to the fact that the council required metal at all times of the year it had been securing its metal by special arrangements with the operators of the quarries in the case of the Motumaoho and Tahuna quarries, and he thought the proprietor of the quarry at Gordon, Mr. Montague, was also entitled to special consideration. He was sure both tenderers would accept the arrangement suggested by him. Cr. Stark thought the best course would be not to accept either tender, but for the riding members concerned to make their arrangements with the tenderers. Failing this the council would have to accept the lowest tender. Cr. McLean said he would like to see the two quarries at Gordon kept open. Cr. Lowry agreed, but said there was a principle concerned in the matter of tenders. The amendment \yas carried, so that W. S. Goosman and Co., Ltd., get the contract for 2400 yards of metal. County Employees Union The Tauranga County Council forwarded a circular letter asking for support for a request to the Counties’ Association that all county employees be included in a County F.mployees’ Union and not' divided up among unions already existing. The chairman and Cr. Stark thought this was a good idea, and a motion giving the council’s support was approved.
