ELLERSLIE CARNIVAL

Matamata Successes

A notable feature of the Auckland Racing Club’s Christmas and New Year meeting was the success of country-trained horses. In this Matamata was closely connected with wins by Prince Ven and Royal Dance. There were some who doubted Prince Ven’s ability to travel seven furlongs with the crack hacks, but R. J. Mateer’s charge won the Robinson Handicap by a very _courageous finish. In this race Mr. S. Brindle’s Dancing Lady was fourth. Prince Ven was not produced again until the third day when he ran third after being badly placed in the County Handicap. 1 He made his first appearance in open company in the Bowen Handicap on the fourth day, and was a popular choice for. the second leg. He was a racecourse certainty beaten into third place through being blocked at a vital stage of the race by the two leaders, Boughal and Silver Streak. It would appear that Prince Ven is one of the most promising sprinters in the province at the present time. His condition was a credit to his trainer, R. J. Mateer, who should be rewarded with, another win in the very near future.

Mr. J. Clothier’s Royal Dance won the Newmarket Handicap nicely after going a creditable race in the Railway Handicap. This was Matamata’s biggest win, the race . being worth £350 to the winner. The Railway Handicap was Royal Dance’s first appearance in open company, • and he appeared to appreciate the lighter scale of weights. Dancing Lady, owned at Mafcamata, woh the County Handicap >on the third day to recoup her owner* by way of £175. Dancing Lady is trained by J. W-. Cathro, formerly of Matamata, who also produced Dark Marble, -Mr. J. Corbett’s geldingv which ran third in the Waitemata Handicap, of li miles. Dark Marble would have been second with a few feet further to go, as he was heating everything for pace in the closfyg 'stagis:- 'M.fhe - last: day, iriddep lty Wiggins, d&'utag'-nbt. in- the fighting line iA the middle stages* bfct finished fifth, i :
