Children's Column
FOR YOUNG MATAMATA FOLK.
Motto for the Week :
Wise men are always humble.
Girls and Boys,— These colder nights have evidently had a good effect on our correspondents. The Post Bag has had quite a lot of news in it lately. New Buds and Leaves almost every week, and, I believe, by spring there will bo a few Flowers.
Do you know the story of the drum? To us the drum is a jolly toy or a very useful instrument in a band; but in the wilder countries the drum plays a great part in the lives of the people. The natives of Africa used drums for sending messages over miles of dense forest. They are masters of the drum language and can warn the people of their village of any approaching danger by a series of drum taps, i The' code is secret and is never divulged outside the tribe. Possibly the wierdest team of musicians in the world is the private band of the King of Ashanti. It is composed of seven drummers and the band never plays except when the King is present. The drums vary in shape and size and are made gay with coloured tassels. There is another curious band in the Belgian Congo. The instruments are three or four horns made from elephants’ tusks and six drums of various sizes. The boom from the larger drum can be heard miles away. Among the Chinese, too, drums play an important part in ceremonies. Sometimes the drums here are beaten by hands instead of drumsticks.
The drum and the horn share the distinction of being man’s first musical instruments. The hollow elephant tusk and rough skin drum founded the dance bands of to-day, they tell us. Well, children, please keep writing ;to me, for I do love receiving your letters. I wish my letter to you was always interesting, but I’ll do my best. Love from JILL. BIRTHDAY GREETINGS.
