GOOD DAIRY FARMS.
IN KEREONE DISTRICT.
High Production Per Acre. Among the highly-productive dairy farms in the Morrinsville district is that of Mr. Jackson McCall, a property of 48 acres at Kereone. Mr. McCall’s herd of .37 cows produced last season 11,285 pounds of butterfat, according to factory figures. This gives an average produc- j lion of 305 pounds of fat per cow and 256 pounds of fat per acre for the 44 acres of actual pasture. Seven years ago only 16 cows were ! milked on this farm, and did not do i very well. i
A race runs right through the middle of the farm, taking up two acres, while two more acres are occupied by the house, garden and poultry runs, this leaving 44 acres of pasture for the stock. The farm has 16 subdivisions, with water in each paddock. The paddocks are topdressed with 3cwt of super and 4cwt to scwt of lime per acre. The herd comprises 14 mature cows, 11 heifers, and the balance second and third calvers. Last season was started with a herd of 40 cows, all of which were milked until January 14, when four were sold, leaving 36, and in March another cow was disposed of. Three more were sold in April. This left only 32, so the average number for the j season could be set down at about 36 or 37. The farm also wintered four heifers, seven calves, two bulls and two j horses.
Up to the present season Mr. and Mrs. McCall have done all the work on the farm except haymaking. A three-cow milking plant is used.
