MATAMATA JERSEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. Membership of Fifty. The annual meeting of the Matamata Jersey Club was attended on Wednesday by 28 members. Mr. H. Lewis (president) presided. President’s Address. /? In Ms annual address to the members., Mr. Lewis said that the membership approached the half century. During the past year the first Jersey Oaks competition had been finalised, and the club extended its congratulations to the winner, Mr. J. E. Barker. The total amount of prize money at the close of the competition was £23 12s 4d. Owing to lack of enthusiasm it had been decided to discontinue any further oaks competitions. The club had also to congratulate Mr. A. E. Brookes on winning the club’s challenge cup for a pair of yearling heifers owned by a breeder within a radius of 20 miles of Matam&ta post office. Mr. Brookes had now won the cup outright, not only by winning the cup two years in succession, but also three times at intervals.

Two Demonstrations Hifid.

Two demonstrations had been held by the club, one at Tirau and one at Matamata. Mr. Petersen, of Waitara, had acted as demonstrator, and both gatherings were very successful. Mr. Petersen had departed from the orthodox methods in demonstrating and had aroused comment and keen interest. The club was indebted to Mr. Petersen for donating his expenses to be given as prize-money for an oral judging competition for school boys at next year’s demonstration. . Club’s Bull Sale. Last year’s bull sale had not been quite so successful as usual from a vendor’s point of view. There was

j an entry of 104 bulls for the next J sale, and it was hoped that all stock | would be brought forward in the j best possible condition. I I Testing Dams. Referring to testing Mr. Lewis impressed upon members the abso--1 lute necessity of placing their cows under C.O.R. test. The association . at Palmerston North was now pay- . ing £3 3s towards the fee for the first cow every season, and it meant that the first cost was now reduced to £5 ss. Further, the whole or any j number of the rest of the herd could :be placed under Government herd ' test at a cost of 5s per cow. If ! members did not test they would ! have to give pride of place to those ! breeders who were meeting the demand for stock from tested dams. In conclusion, Mr. Lewis thanked officers and members for their support and co-operation during the past j year. The club was also indebted to the Matamata press representatives for support. ' .Club’s Balance-sheet. ! The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £lB 4s 9d. The receipts totalled £B7 18s 6d, the main sources of income being subscriptions £l6, subsidies £27 10s 6d, bull sale £8 16s, and oaks trust account £ls 17s 4d. On the expenditure side the sum of £53 12s 4d was paid to

the A. and P. Association for prizemoney.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted with enthusiasm, members expressing their appreciation of the satisfactory position revealed and of the work done by the president and secretary. , Election of Officers. The election of officers for the coming year resulted as follows: President, Mr. H. Lewis; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. J. E. Barker, J. F. Vosper, W. Mears, E. Bold and E. M. PefFers; secretary, Mr. M. E. ' Gould; executive, Messrs. H. J. Bar- ; ford, R. K. Garland, S. J. Robinson, . A. E. Brookes and A. Mouldey. j

Remit to Breeders’ Association. It was decided to send a remit to the New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association asking that a fullyqualified demonstrator be appointed for New Zealand, as members of the classification committee, who were the official demonstrators, did not

visit the district at the right time, but when farmers were too busy making hay and ensilage.

Donation, of Cups.

To replace the cup won outright by Mr. A. E. Brookes, of Okauia, the club decided to donate another £5 5s cup to the A. and P. Association for the best two yearling heifers owned by a member within 20 miles of the Matamata post office. It was also decided that the winner each year should receive a miniature replica of the cup. Mr. J. F. Vosper offered to provide next year’s miniature cup. Calf Club Cup. The meeting further decided to donate a £2 2s cup for the best Jersey calf owned by a member of the Calf Club and also a prize for the best C.O.R. cows at the show, particulars to be decided at a later meeting. Honorarium to Officials. As a token of appreciation of the work done, an honorarium of £2 each was voted the president and secretary.
