Mr. W. H. Allen has detumed from Wellington. A False Alarm.
Curiosity and speculation were caused in Tirau last week by a deserted car left at the side of a by-road near the township. The car showed signs of having recently been in a smash, the headlights and front mudguards being bent and a curtain torn. The car was seen to draw up at the roadside at about 7.30 a.m., and two hatless young men, each wearing an overcoat and carrying a small suitcase, got out and walked away. The car was left unattended all day, but the mystery was cleared up during the evening when the owner arrived hy service car from Auckland and continued the journey to his home in his own car, which had been brought to Tirau by friends wishing to travel in that direction and parked there to await his return. The damage to the car had been caused some days previously by a collision with a cow when travelling at night.
