Women’s Institute.

MATAMATA BRANCH. At the July meeting of the Matamata Women’s Institute on Tuesday Mrs. G. G. Bell presided over an attendance of 40 members. Tiiree new members were elected. A competition for the best article made from material costing not more than 6d drew some good entries. The judges, Mesdames P. Laurie and W. S. Wilson, declared Mrs. Lowrie’s entry of two pairs of babies’ bootees’ and Mrs. Clyffe Taylor’s hand-made tray complete with embroidered traycloth made from a flour bag as the winning articles. The prize, donated by Mrs. R. Hawes, was Anally awarded to Mrs. Lowrie, who won in the drawing of straws. Another advertisement competition was won by Mrs. K. N. Gouk, j Mrs. J. H. Hawes donating the . prize.

LICHFIELD BRANCH. On Wednesday about 40 local ladies met at the hall to discuss forming a branch of the Women’s Institute at Lichfield. Mrs. Faulkner, the hon. organiser of the Waikato Federation of the Women’s Institute, was present and outlined the history and aims of the organisation. It was decided to start a branch of the institute. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mrs. J. H. Lynn; vice-president, Mrs. W. J. , Baldwin; secretary, Mrs. A. E. Barr Brown; assistant secretary, Miss j Margaret Baldwin; committee, Mes- J dames Rea and Lynds and Miss J. J Sneddon; press correspindent, Miss E. Bowman. -;

The older school girls served the afternoon tea which was provided by the ladies. The first is to be held on July 11. % Votes of thanks

were accorded to Miss McCarroll and Mrs. Faulkner.

HINUERA BRANCH. Mrs. Hammonds presided over the July meeting at which there was a record attendance, including five ladies from Te Poi. A handsome floor rug made from old coloured felt hats, cut and set in block formation, was exhibited by Mrs. Cockerton. The work was done by members of the Te Roti Institute, Taranaki. Mrs. C. T. Adamson, of the Matamata St. John Ambulance Brigade, gave an interesting and comprehensive address on haemorrhage and the importance of first aid. The address was much appreciated.

A novel feature of the afternoon was a playette entitled “ Postal Orders,” which, thanks to Mrs. Wade for her coaching, was a great success. Those taking part were Mesdames Hammonds, Barlow, G. Collins, C. Brown and H. Kneebone. The points competition for the best article made from a sugar bag was won by Mrs. De Renzy, with Mrs. Dunsford second and Mrs. Dawson third. The judges were

Mesdames Connell and Cockerton. ! The roll call was “ Gardening' Hints.” Mrs. De Renzy interested those j present by demonstrating how to I make baby’s socks from the tops of men’s socks. Some beautiful crochet work exhibited by Mrs. Kneebone was much admired. Afternoon tea was served by i Mesdames Wilson, R. Hawke and ! Wikinson.

WHITIKAHU BRANCH. The first birthday of the Whitikahu Women’s Institute was celebrated in the Whitikahu Hall, between Tauhei and Orini, on Saturday evening. About 60 members and friends were present, including several visitors from the Orini and Taupiri institutes. The roll call, “ What the Men Think of the Women’s Institute,” brought forth some good responses which caused much amusement. An excellent supper was served, after which a handsome birthday . cake surmounted by one candle was ■ cut by the president (Mrs. P. H. Clark). The ingredients of the cake ■ were given by members, and it was * taked by Mrs. B. Lav/ and iced by ] Mrs. W. H. Best. <
