Master Rex Taylor, who broke his collarbone at the Matamata Primary School, is now progressing favourably.

An examination of candidates for the St. John Ambulance was held at Putaruru oiv Friday, thirty-three candidates sitting. . The results will not be known until the papers are returned from Auckland.

Mr. V. Crawshay, of Putaruru, met with an accident a few days ago, when a cart he was driving overturned. Mr. Crawshay sustained severe contusion to the muscles of the back and neck, and he was sent to the Waikato Hospital by Dr. S. L. Haslett for X-ray examination and treatment. At present the exact extent of the injuries are not known.

Laughter was created on the stand at Bedford Park on Saturday when, during a stoppage for an injury, a visitor made a loud call for Waterson. This happened to be the name of one of the visitors’ emergencies, and as it also is the name of the local undertaker, visiting spectators joined in the amusement when this position was explained to them.

At a meeting of the Putaruru branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association last week it was decided to hold a reunion this month. The question of the admittance of honorary members was discussed, and it was resolved that membership in this respect shall depend on the services rendered to the association by the applicant and at the committee’s discretion.

With the object of creating more interest in the work of the school, a “ parents’ day ” was held by the staff of the Matamata Primary School yesterday afternoon, when there was a very good attendance. Samples of the work done by each class were exhibited on the walls, and those attending were also enabled to see the various classes at work. Afternoon tea was provided, and the function was very successful.

Mr. Guillard, proprietor of the Lichfield quarries, stated this week that arrangements had been finalised for the supply of a large quantity of Putaruru stone for the Dunedin post office and the State Fire Insurance office. Several other large works were contemplated by the Government, but Mr. Guillard said he was not yet at liberty to disclose the nature of these. Questioned regarding the number of men to be, employed at Lichfield, Mr. Guillard said a lot depended on how the building contractors required the stone. When both quarries were opened it was expected that 30 men would be employed.
