CONCRETE CUP.

Walton 11, Matamata' 8.

Walton fully deserved their victory in the final game for the Concrete Cup, donated by Mr. Steve Stockdale, played on Saturday, and their wip should do much to keep the Rugby flag flying in the Walton centre. Matamata made a great rally in the last 15 minutes, but the blue line was held intact on several occasions when a score looked certain. Walton were battlers all through, with no one particularly outstanding, if Fausett’s two. great tackles of Kneebone in ,the last five minutes are excepted. Matamata played two. short in .the first spell and ope short.throughout. The teams were :-**’• jfliA* Matamati' (bl'acktand white) —Fullback, Fitzgerald; threequarters, bone, Carlson, Robertson; five-eighths Henry, Egan; half, Davy; rover, Story; forwards, Ford, Ensor, White, Fletcher, Malligan.

Walton (blue).—Fullback, W. Carroll; threequarters," K. Wallace, P. Dixon, E. -Conning; five-eighths, Fausett, A. Wallace; half, Groube; rover, Kuhtz; forwards, A. Dixon, Muir, Martin, J. Carroll, Ouston, Ferry, D. Dixon. Referee: Mr. W. E. Clover.

The game was witnessed by a mere handful of spectators. Though the sun w r as shining when the ball was kicked off, showers had made the ground somewhat greasy, and a high wind was blowing across field. Play settled inside the Matamata half from the kick-off and from an early scrum Egan and Henry handled to send Carlson away. The big fellow cut the opposition in two and served Story at the fullback, for the rover to score at the posts. Carlson converted. Matamata 5, Walton 0. Matamata were playing two short, and Walton one, but at this stage W. Carroll completed the latter’s, team. A couple of penalties to Walton from the second of which Fausett’s kick fell short, assisted to keep Matamata on defence. From a scrum on the 25 Groube and Kuhtz worked the blind side. With the defence concentrating on the winger, Kuhtz passed in again to Groube, who concluded a pretty movement successfully. Fausett failed at goal.

Walton 3, Matamata 5.

Story made the next movement of note by breaking clear on his own. Carroll got him, but Ford dropped Story’s pass with the line open.

Kuhtz led the blues to the home line, but Fitzgerald marked a short kick. Story returned to the other end, where the wind just turned Carlson’s kick, from a free near touch, wide of the posts. A dash down the touch line by Robertson put Matamata on attack, but the bine pack came back to within ten yards of the home line. The blues carried on and swarmed on the home line, but on crossing Robertson got the touch. The game was carried on at this stage in a listless manner, the backs on both sides being starved of the ball if not with the cold. Matamata wpre battling on the home 25 when Fausett secured and kicked well downfield. Kneebone failed to gather and the blues carried on. Fitzgerald came across, but was overwhelmed. The ball shot across field parallel with the line, and after several blues had failed to pick up and drop across, J. Carroll succeeded in holding the greasy ball and touching down at the posts. Fausett converted. Half-time: Walton 8, Matamata 5. On resuming, Conning put the blues on attack with a grubber screw-kick to touch. Story came back with a solo run, handing off two opponents, but Ensor got offside. Fausett regained the lost ground with a big punt and from the scrum the blues dribbled to the line, where Kuhtz fell over. Fausett failed with the kick. "

Walton 11, Matamata 5.

Short now come on for Matamata, and Egan sent Carlson away. The latter made a great opening, but Robertson dropped the pass. A free against .Robertson was kicked almost

straight out. Carlson scissored well with Story, but Short dropped the pass. At the other end Walton got clear with the ball? but lacked a speed merchant to beat Kneebone. Story started a movement in his own half Carlson carried on. Short joined in and returned to Story. Ford

and Malligan next handled, but the latter was downed with supports waiting and the line open. It was a close shave for Walton. Carlson next had a shot which fell under the bar. At halfway Egan secured from a lineout and shook himself clear. Story and Davy shot to his support, and the five-eighths'" dummied to Davy, who, when collared, returned to Egan, who got over in a good position. Carlson missed the kick.

Matamata 8, Walton 11

Matamata livened up for the last quarter and a free, taken by Story, saw the ball forced. Fausett was now playing fullback and W. Carroll playing five-eighths. The game now became almost hard and Egan and Martin were associated in a laughable incident. Matamata battled near the home line and Story tried to work a quick free kick but the referee was ‘‘not satisfied. A long throw-in saw Carlson nearly over, and, from a speculator, Fitzgerald tried a drop which went wide. Carlson next smashed his way through the ruck to send Henry and Kneebone away with the line open. Fausett, however, came across at top speed and bundled the winger into the flag. Carlson again let Kneebone away, but Fausett again got man and ball and saved a score. The blues were now hard put to it to keep Matamata out, for whom Carlson was playing in great style. Considerable excitement was now aroused and just when it seemed as if the Walton line must fall the whistle went for time.
