THE MATAMATA RECORD, MONDAY, APRIL 7, 1930. RUGBY.

DURING the course of his remarks at the annual meeting,’ the president of the Matamata Rugby Union referred to the solid position of local finances, and expressed the opinion that one of the needs of the worldwide game of Rugby w.as greater uniformity in regard to rules, so that international teams could meet m any country without friction. In regard to the first matter, little that was of a congratulatory nature was said at the meeting of the work of those officials who have been untiring in their efforts for the good of the game in this district. One speaker, however, referred to the good work done, and nominated the retiring committee en bloc for reelection. That all were successful proves their efforts are appreciated even if delegates are somewhat inarticulate in expressing their approval. There can be no question but that the game in this district is managed on sound and progressive lines, and that its administration and standard of playing strength will compare favourably with any similar sub-union in New Zealand. In regard to the appeal for uniformity in rules, all who have the true interests of the game at heart will be thoroughly in accord with the president’s expression of opinion. The unwritten canons of the game demand that it be played without friction, even in Germany, as the president suggested. . Unfortunately the issue in regard to uniformity of rules is somewhat clouded, and, quite wisely, no suggestion of procedure was introduced into the president’s appeal. The matter was simply left to the sporting instincts of those present in the hope that all would do their best to promote a more harmonious state of affairs. Rugby at its best sets a high standard; it is pleasing to realise that in the Matamata district the administration of the game is in such farseeing and able hands.
