Hockey.
Matamata Club. Only two members of the Matamata Hockey Club rolled up for the annual meeting, which was to have been held on Monday. The secretary, Mr. J. Melville, was indisposed and unable to attend. The two members attending, Mr. T. H. Prowse (president) and Mr. Sutherland (captain) were not disposed to view the prospects for the coming year through rose-coloured spectacles, and doubts were expressed as to whether it would be possible to raise a team this season. Last year only the bare number necessary to run a team was available, and several of these on account of removal and other causes will not be playing locally, this season. As no new blood appears to be offering the prospects at the moment appear far from bright. A noteworthy feature this year is the detailed and explicit financial return made available by the secretary. It contains all the information sought by members with a surplus which is an improvement on that of last year, The credit balance is £4 8s 9d Putaruru Club. It is expected that the Putaruru ladies will have a very strong side' again this season, but whether they will be able to field two teams this year remains to be seen. There are several good male hockey players now settled in the Putaruru district, and efforts are being made to form a men’s team. It is reported that the efforts are meeting with suc'pess, and in 111 probability a male team wearing the red and black colours will be seen in action during the next few weeks. If nothing eventuates on these lines it is hoped that the players available in each district will combine and form one strong club, so that the game will not die out in this part of the Upper Waikato.
