HARDLEY SHIELD. A Matamata rink—E. €. Banks, A. Oates, F. Livingstone and G. Stewart (s) —took part in the Hardley Shield contest against Auckland at Hamilton on Wednesday. In the morning game the rink had an easy victory over Dimmery, Knight, Jenkin, DufHn (s), by 32 —17. In the afternoon they went down after a keenly-contested game with Whiteley, Wemham, C. Hardley, J. F. Bailey , (s), by 24—£0. . , Another Matamata player',''WC'M. Crabb, also took part, playing No. 3 for Clavis (Ngaruawahia). Clavis lost his game in the morning against Gladding but won in the afternoon against Duncan Fraser. MR. B. U. P. GREENWOOD’S ENTRY. / The Matamata bowling greet* is “ graced ” occasionally these fine autumn days by a new sampler of the ancient game in the person, of Mr. B. U. P. Greenwood, the newcomer’s idea being to try out the pastime and get into it in real earnest next spring if he takes a fancy to it. In the meantime Mr. Greenwood is observing things. The method of scoring, for instance, appears to him to be as rotten as apples ready for cider. He puts it this way: If a cricketer makes a run he scores his point, and no amount of subsequent jugglery on the part of his opponents can take away that point, but if a bowler lays one up alongside “ kitty,” kissing and caressing that elusive lady with all the glamour and gladness of new-won love, he will gain nothing if some rude follower bashes his bowl out of the favoured position. This seems to Mr. Greenwood to be particularly hard on him, for be being a novice must always, or nearly always, take the 1 lead, the idea being to get the awkward squad disposed of and out of the way for the real players. The consequence is that when the new chum happens to fluke a good one there is every probability of it being filched from him before the head is finished. He proposes seeing the centre about the matter. However, there is a sunny side to the picture, for fie finds the bowlers a most genial ppd congenial 4 ‘ body of men,” as the brass hats in; the army say. To a man they will go out of their way to make the path of the diffident novice smooth, and this spirit of helpfulness and goodwill is much appreciated. When it is not possible to say anything pleasant about the new arrival’s play, likely as not some fellow will say: “ You’ve got a good delivery.” That kind of thing seems wondrous kind to \ the clumsy man, who knows full well that he has made a mess of things. One of the most striking and obvious things about bowls, as far as Mr. Greenwood’s few observations go, is the camaraderie shown, not only among the members of a given club, but among bowlers as a class of sportsmen. Last Saturday’s visiting day at Matamata reminded him of the visits of members of lodges to the various installation or' other ceremonies. These things must broaden out ones mind by the contact with others from all over the country, and often from overseas. As he flung off to have another rollup, Mr. Greenwood said he would give us a few more say-sos when he had had further look-sees.
