MATAMATA CARNIVAL. Successful Function. The first open carnival of the newly-formed Matamata District Swimming Club was held at the Opal Springs on Thursday evening. The attendance was such as to give the club officials confidence in future operations, quite 300 passing the ticket box. A feature of the evening was the closeness of the finishes in most of the races, testifying to the excellent work of the handicappers. The officials were : Starter, Mr. C. Taylor ; check starter, Mr. H. Briscoe ; announcer, Mr. D. Higgins ; swimming judges, Messrs. W. Emslie, W. Ruthe, H. Sutherland, senior, and W. R. Stevens ; diving judges, Messrs. K. Buchanan and W. F. Faulkner ; timekeepers, Messrs. R. H. Martin and J. Tapper ; competitors’ stewards, Messrs. Spinley and La Trobe ; ladies’ steward, Mrs. Winstone ; secretary, Mr. W. F. Faulkner. During the evening Mr. D. Higgins addressed the assemblage on the ' objects of the club, particularly emphasising the fact lhat .it was desired to make it thoroughly representative of the Matamata district. The subscription was low enough to attract anyone who appreciated the value of swimming to the community. Mr. R. W. Stevens, a vice-presi-dent of the club, welcomed the visiting patrons and swimmers and thanked them for their support. He said there would be many people in the district who would be surprised at the most reasonable subscription to the club (2s 6d) for membership. It was a much lighter “touch” than he had expected. Mr. Stevens then presented Virginia Scott and Colin Spinley with special prizes, donated by Mr. and Mrs. F. Underwood, for the most improved pupils under Miss L. Copplestone’s tuition. A report of the proceedings would not be complete without particular reference to the work of the secretary, Mr. W. F, Faulkner, the starter, Mr.- Cliffe Taylor, and the announcer, Mr. D. B. Higgins. The former’s experience stood the club in good stead, whilst Messrs. Taylor and Higgins carried put their important duties in a most efficient manner. Results were:— Dual Relay Race.—Miss M.
