DEER PRESERVE.
ON TE TAPUI BLOCK. Opposition by Farmers. * I Opposition to the proposal to set aside the Te Papui’ block and adjoining areas as a deer preserve was made by Cr. Moir at the Maich. meeting oi the Matamata County Council. The member for Peria . pointed out that the Acclimatisation ' Society was desirous of preserving i the deer, but these animals constituted a future menace. Though they were not doing a great deal of damage just now, but if preserved, in a few years’ time they would overrun the place. It was nothing for him to raise a mob of from ten to a dozen at the back of his property. There were about 12,000 acres in the block and having resided there for. 17 years he knew the country well. Only Matamata ratepayers were affected, and he understood that a Government official had been round sounding farmers likely to be affected by the proposal, and all had expressed opposition to the idea. He had seen a mob of 20 deer on his place. The chairman remarked that in the old days there were thousands of deer in the locality. The engineer stated that he had opposed the suggestion when it had • been made at the meeting of the society in Matamata. The deer had a big range and went through Pemberton’s place right up to Horahora. On the motion of Crs. Moir and Cox, it was decided to protest to the Internal Affairs Department against ; the proposal to turn the block into a ; deer preserve.
