Brief Mention.

An application from Mr. F. Rose, Tirau, to erect petrol pumps by the front of the billiard saloon was approved by the Matamata County Council, provided, the pumps were placed as close as possible and as far away, from the post office as possible. The engineer to the Matamata County Council was instructed at Friday’s meeting to obtain prices for a new, one-man grader. It was mentioned at the meeting that so great was the work on the main roads now that it was difficult for the ridings to get the use of the 'graders. On the recommendation of .the Works • Committee, the Matamata County Council decided to request the Auckland Automobile Association to obtain permission from the council before erecting directional signs which have the effect of diverting through traffic from the main highways to other roads. The quantity of butter received into store for grading throughout New Zealand during January showed an increase of 12.1 per cent over January of last -.year, and was 7.5 per cent less than the amount received in December. Cheese received into stores was 4.4 per cent less than for January, 1929, and 6,1 per cent less than for December. Production figures for the present season show that up to the end of January 11.6 per cent more butter had been produced and 4 per cent less cheese. A Kereone resident who visited Arapuni during the week-end states that anyone periodically -visiting Arapuni must realise the danger that is steadily developing at the bottom of the spillway. Since January another 20 yards of rock has been razed away at the waterfall, and if the rate of erosion is maintained within ten weeks the drop will have reached the spot where the emergency works are in progress. He thought the gradual erosion was rac-, ing the staff, who are pi;eparing the relief measures.
