INCORRECT SPARK ADVANCE

The effect of incorrect ' spark advance depends to a considerable extent on the general design of an en-, gine and particularly on the form of combustion chamber, but speaking generally there can be no doubt that .spark adyance exercises a marked influence on tho power, fuel consumption, coolness of running, durability of valves, silence and so the starting and idling properties of an engine. This being so, it is clearly desirable that engines should always be operated with .correct ignition timing. Bearings are frequently stressed through failure to retard the spark j ] when travelling on top-gear up severe grades. Knocking is fre- , quently caused through too much advance when the speed on top is low. J , This does not apply to second gear 1 work, for the reason that piston speed then remains high.
