HERITAGE.
Not 1 one of us ever attains the goal unaided, first and last. Something each one of us surely owes to the present cr the past. Books, and people, whence thoughts and deeds have surged in a generous stream; we are all in debt, either more or less, to the pionee s of dream. Experience,- in endless links, has fashioned the endless chain to which we cling when our barque’s adrift and we’re struggling to shore again. When we’ve swum to land with the Victor’s smile, and just' refuse to drown, be sure some link in the chain has held, or the waves would have let us down! So whatever the shining goal we reach, with grace let us take our stand; nor flatter ourselves that the heights were climbed with never a guide at hand! Present or past, ’tis all the same; the guiding light gleams on; the never failing legacy of those who have thought—and done! H.S.
