THE “BLUEBOTTLE.”
COMBATING A PEST. “The latest instance of an insect costing millions to the unfortunate country importing it is that of the bluebottle fly in Australia. 'There it has spread arid inci eased so formidably, infesting stock, that three years ago it killed during the 12 months more than £3,000,000 worth of Sheep," writes Mr N. Tourmens in Chamber's Journal. Theoretically every insect has its own enemy or enemies. So science sets out to destroy the destroyer by means of the destroyer (or destroyers) of destroyers. For example, the English bluebottle or blowfly now so preying on the sheep stock of Australia has certain parasitic ■ Steps have been taken to introduce its enemies into Australia, and they will be given bluebottle grubs. In these they will lay their eggs, and then the parasite-infested grubs, after having been sent out to the sheepruns, will hatch out there, and the parasites will in turn destroy the destroyers of . the sheep.
