OKOROIRE RAILWAY.
Railway Requirements. Consequent upon the natural development of farming in the Okoroire district, the facilities at the railway station need enlarging to cope with the increased business offering. The most glaring shortcoming is the inadequacy of the railway stock yards, which are altogether too small. Lately one farmer brought in a line of bullocks, but was unable to truck them owing to the pens being too small to hold the stock. Another farmer was unable to yard his lambs, for a similar reason. This is one matter upon which the newly - formed Ratepayers’ Association might well make representations to the District Traffic Manager, New Zealand Railways, Auckland. It might also be helpful to seek the assistance of Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P. for Rotorua..
Totman’s Road.
Another-matter in which the association might well display some active and constructive interest is the state of Totman’s road, the soft stretches of which badly need metalling. Last winter the settlers had a gruelling time, even the doctor having to abandon his car on once occasion and get horses to complete the journey. There are no fewer than eighteen motor vehicles owned Avithin a radius of * three miles on this road, and considering the highly-cul-tivated state of most of the farms the rates therefrom should warrant more expenditure. The settlers were promised that the road—an important outlet would be attended to when the j,weather, permitted, but they observe with misgivings the fact that, although the weather has been favourable for weeks past, there is no sign of action. In' the above-mentioned two matters alone there is ample scope for the new association to try its wings and justify its existence generally.
