Eighty years ago, on October 28t Queen Victoria opened the present London Royal Exchange, with a pomp and circumstance stated by Timbs to have been unrivalled in his time. The building dontains in its solid piers and concrete foundations a network of wrought-iron hooping, a device which has been developed recently under tlie name of ferro-concrete or reinforced concrete. The original exchange was built on wooden piles, which at the time of the Great Fire proved but indifferent props for a ball that was emblematic of the wealth of a nation.
