SALEYARDS SITUATION.

UNATTRACTIVE PROPOSITION. Investigation of the proposition for the estblishment of municipal saleyards at Matamata discloses nothing but discouragement. Mr. B. C. Taylor (president of the Matamsfofc Chamber of Commerce), who favours municipal yards rather than lose the sales at Matamata, provided that such yards would not be a burdea on the ratepayers, lias been delving into the question. In giving his views before a meeting of the committee of the chamber, Mr. Taylor said he had secured certain figures, the import of which was that the revenue from the present yards was only about onethird of what would be required to pay interest and sinking fund' on the concrete - floored yards that would have to be provided if the board took them over.

Mr. Taylor, interviewed by a representative of the Record, said that the board and the chamber would, he believed, be quite ready to give the companies every assurance of security of tenure. So far, there had been no evidence brought forward from any source—although, such was invited—to show {hat the board could possibly close the yards so longas the Health Department was satisfied with the sanitary and hygenic conditions obtaining. If a revenue of, say, only £2OO was forthcoming, whereas say, £6OO, would be required, he for one was not prepared to urge the ratepayers to .shoulder that burden on top of their present rates. It seems that that which is not an economical proposition for the auctioneering companies is not a business one for the town, despite the indirect trade advantages of having the stock sales conducted in Matamata.
