SPAYING CULL COWS.

MORRINSVILLE OPERATIONS. • Last season an agitation Avas commenced by the Morrinsville branch of the N.Z. Farmers' Union to spay all unprofitable cows in the Morrinsville dairy herds. This movement gained a certain amount of support and a number of farmers had their cullsoperated upon. In some cases tlTe results were not satisfactory, some of the cows showing ill. effects and a few dying. However, despite the losses of last season a number of farmers have again shown a desire to have their culls treated and during the past fewweeks between 50 and 60 cows were operated upon. The results on this occasion are reported to be, without exception, quite satisfactory, none of the cows showing any ill effects as a result of the operation.

Some of the farmers who last season supported the movement would not leave themselves open to any losses this year but now that it is known that the operation can be conducted without danger to the cows it may be an inducement for several of the dubious ones to come forward.

The value of the operation is recognised as converting unprofitable milking cows into more valuable beef animals and when doubts as to the success of the operation arc completely dispelled most oi" the dairy herds will be minus many scrubbers.
