HAUL OF £3OOO.
JEWEL THIEVES SCORE. Expert Safe Blowers. Evidence that a desperate gang of safe-blowers is at work in Sydney was accorded last Sunday, when, in the most barefaced manner, a safe was blown at, Newton and £3OOO worth of jewels stolon. > Smaller cases of similar nature havo been occurring on and off for three months, but they have been obviously the work of comparative 'amateurs. Sunday's case, however, is stamped as an example of the best work of an expert in the use of gelignite A jeweller, J. 11. Wood, of King Street. Newton, was tho victim, and both he and the police are at a loss to account for the fact that the men were not seen in the act.
Wood's shop is protected by barred doors and windows, and, as an added measure, he had transparent panes of glass placed in windows and doors in such a manner that anyone passing could see what was going on in the shop.
