TE AWAMUTU-PUTARURU RAILWAY.

BOAI) IMPROVEMENTS REQUIRED. The clerk to the Tc Awamutu-Puta-ruru Railway Board wrote to the Matamata County Council on Wednesday as follows: —"The members of my Board recently made a tour of the Te Awamutu-Putaruru railway district The Board, in travelling through, could not but notice the very backward condition of a very large portion of this district. The land is capable of giving good returns and pf carrying a much greater population than at present, but is hampered in almost every way by the utter lack of transport facilities. The crying need of metal on many miles of road was very apparent to all. There is mctds in large quantity within the district, but owing to lack of roads and rail it is not at present available. An inspection of the various routes suggested for the railway indicates that an improvement in the roading facilities is necessary, and that if the railway is to be a financial success lateral roads are needed, together with an abundant supply of road metal. To secure the best results for the district by rail and by road, close cooperation is needed between the Board, the ratepayers and the local bodies controlling the district roads, together with the Government Departments which administer the Crown Lands in. the Board's district. My Board, at a future date, proposes to approach the Council with the view to arranging a conference between the different local bodies interested, with 'ho view to securing the- necessary co-operation, and trust such a proposal will receive your cordial support." Cr. Pohlen: 1 don't kt.o.v where the money is to come from.

Cr. Bent said it was about two months ago that the visit was made, and the roads at that time were very bad. His motion, that the letter be " received," was carried.
