N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

Matamata Branch Meeting The monthly meeting of the Matamata branch of the N.Zi Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday evening, Mr. H. Rollelt presiding. FARMERS’ POLITICAL PARTY. A discussion took place with regard to the suggested formation of a Farmers’ political party, the subject being introduced through a letter received from the provincial secretary. It was decided that the branch was of opinion that until farmers arc more settled on their holdings, and there is lens speculation in farms, there was very little prospect of forming a successful Farmers’ Political Party. The effect of this unsettled state in the activity of the farmers who arc members, it was stated, was felt even in the Matamata branch. Police constable. It was decided to express appreciation to the Minister for Justice upon the appointment of a police constable for Matamata. It was stated that police protection was urgently needed. PURITY OF MANURES. The following, morion was proposed by Mr. A. Bowler, and seconded by Mr. H. Rollett: “ That the branch again notes with satisfaction that the Agricultural Department has again taken action regarding the purity of manures.” + Mr. Bowler stated that the Depart-, ment was now insisting upon a true certificate. It was, he said, only the Department that would take action in such cases, as the certificates were not understood by the average farmer. SALEYARDS. It was decided to write to the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co., Ltd., pointing out the unsatisfactory state of the saleyards, and to ask for repairs to be carried out pending the erection of new yards. HYDRO-ELECTRIC BOARDS. The branch decided to make known to the farmers of the district as much as possible that it was inadvisable to enter into any contracts with private firms for wiring and requisites as tlie Electric Board would supply all required. It was stated that a depot and showroom would be established in Matamata.

A bazaar in aid of the Matamata Methodist Church funds will bo held in the Town Hall on Tuesday, December 7 th.
