ASSAULT AT MATAMATA.

Chinaman’s Shop Damaged. At about 10.30 on Saturday night last three men apparently well under the influence of liquor entered the shop of Wong Lee at Matamata and after an altercation assaulted the Chinaman and smashed several of the front windows with apples and a beer bottle. Wong Lee received facial injuries through being hit by one of the men. J. Gratton and C. Stewart, two returned soldiers, with four and a-half years’ service each, were charged with the assault and wilful damage to property at Matamata on Monday before Mr H. W. Smales, J.P., and were remanded to appear before the magistrate on Friday. Bail was given in two sureties of £25..
