A SHOPPING SPREE
35 FRENCH WOMEN NAUMBERG, Germany. Sad-faced German shopkeepers in Naum berg- breathed a sigh of relief when 35 liberated French women boarded a train for Paris after a wild four-days shopping spree. The women had been in a concentration camp for nearly two years, charged with being members of the French underground. They had not seen a new hat or dress since they left France. Then Captain Vernon Murray, Military Governor of Naumberg, told them they could have anything in the shops—and he ordered a German bachelor to guide them round the town. Thirty-five clothes-hungry women were out on the hunt. The first desire was underclothes. What Naumberg could not provide, Captain Murray ordered the mayor to get from neighbouring towns. The bill for the clothes will be paid out of local-taxes. The bachelor waved good-bye as the train carrying the women left. “I thought that I would get married when the war was over, but after this experience I am finished with women for life,” he said.
