N.Z. INSTITUTE FOR BLIND
ANNUAL APPEAL FOK FUNDS V - j The cure and unliftmeut of the blind i people of this Dominion, together with 3 the maintenance of the Institute, with its many activities—which include the i homes for aged and infirm blind men and women,.homes for blind children, . and adults undergoing education- ’ and 1 training, homes for married men who have lost their sight, schools for cdu- ■ cation and for music, workshops and l tuition and training departments, and the great volume of welfare work that is being carried out amongst the blind . throughout New Zealand • involve very considerable expense, and at the present time, owing to prevailing war i conditions, when there is a greater need for them, or a greater demand upon the Institute and its resources, - there is a greater need for the sympathetic assistance of the public. The N.Z. Institute for the Blind is doing a wonderful work and stands in the forefront of such institutions throughout the world in its care of and upliftment of our blind people. What a source of comfort it must bo to the parents of a blind child when they find that their afflicted one will be fully educated—yes, from the Primers to the University—by means of the Braille system. There arc several ox-pupils from this school who have gained University degrees, all totally blind and having to learn from and be taught by means of Braille. This also applies in music; several blind boys and girls are prepared for and sit for examinations held under Trinity College and other examiners each year. Many blind pupils have gained high honours in- music, they, too, being totally blind and having to learn from and be taught by means of Braille music. What a blessing it must be to the young man or young woman, to the soldier —in short, to all who have the misfortune to suffer loss of sight—when they find that they will be educated to read and write by means of Braille, taught music and typewriting, and trained in some trade or occupation whereby they may be fitted to take their place in the community and become useful citizens, and many do. On behalf of the Director, .Board of Trustees governing the N.Z. Institute for the Blind, and on behalf of the blind people of this rountry, I thank you—l thank all subscribers and supporters—for the generous response given to the N.Z. Institute for Blind during past years, and earnestly solicit the sympathetic assistance and support of all during this present year. It is a groat cause and worthy of your support. Yours sincerely, Jas. F. Egan, representing N.Z. Institute for the Blind in Otago and Southland.
