EXTRACTS FROM THE FILES OF THE LAXE WAKATIP MAIL October 31, 1884.—A well known angler during a few hours recreation at Suunyside creek, running through Mr Wither's property at Bob’s Cove, caught thirteen fish, weighing 281b5., the heaviest of which turned the scales at olbs. Mr G. M. Ross, treasurer to the Wakatipu Hospital, ac-kuowledges the receipt of the following donations through the institution; Lake County Council £99; Queenstown Borough Council £lO/10/-. Mr Fred Evans, manager of the Phoenix Mine, Skippers, brought down this week 132 ounces of bar gold, the proceeds of 100 tons of stone. The mine is looking remarkably well, 24 men are being employed and others will shortly be put on. It is proposed to erect a turbine of 100 horse-power in the left hand branch of Skippers creek. The Railway Department and Waimea Plains Company are in treaty with a view to resumption of the tri-weekly service between the Lakes district and Dunedin. The Loyal Lodge of Wakatipu Lodge advertise a plain dross ball in celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of the Lodge. The tickets are at 7/6 each, to admit lady and gentleman. At the Waste Lands Board Ranger Adair reported on J. Mcßride and Co.’s application for license to cut timber over ten acres at upper Waka s tipu, recommending that the same be granted at 10/- per acre for one year at license fee of £l. For the Victorian races Baigo is backed for the Derby at even money; 7 to 1 Sea Horse and Sandal; 10 to 1 Gratitude. - For the Gup, Oll'-colour and Blink Bonny are at 10 to 1. In mining notes it is stated that the mild weather leading to a plentiful supply of water has revived mining in every part of" the district. At Macetown the Tipperary and Premier companies are busy crushing quartz. The Gladstone and Ail Nations and the Garibaldi have also been at work for some time back. In alluvial mining also, there is increased activity. A return has been prepared showing the amoupt of customs, stamps, land, property tax, beer duty and territorial revenue contributed by each provincial district for the year ending March 31, 1884. The following are the totals: — Otago £792,049; Auckland £524,001; Canterbury £497,559; Wellington £367,739; Hawke’s Bay £110,097; Nelson £103,549; Westland £64,546; Taranaki £49,745; Marlborough £29,561. The last part of the Queenstown waterworks was laid on the 30th October at the creek intake. The tank is well advanced and will shortly be sufficiently complete to let the water on.
