Lake Wakatip Mail Queenstown, Thursday, Nov. 12, 1942 SECOND LIBERTY LOAN
THE time is fast drawing to a close for snbcsribing to the see-
ond Liberty Loan 01 £10,000,000. With two days to go—-to the, 14th November —the amount in hand is approximately eight millions and this does not give much time to reach the target. We have no doubt the amount will be raised and probably over-subscribed. However, there must not be a feeling of complacency on the part of many who have not so far subscribed to the loan. There, are quite a number in this district in this category and we feel sure that on reflection they will not be counted among those who have, not interested themselves in such a vital matter as the provision for the armed forces of guns tanks, food and clothing, etc. If we lose the war what we have left in the way of material wealth will be valueless and with the loss of it will go the loss of our freedom. The amount of this loan does not equal one day’s cost of Britain’s war expenditure. Individual approach to the duty of supporting this loan must vary considerably according to one’s ability to invest and to the sincerity of one’s determination to help with the money when the greater sacrifice of personal service cannot be rendered. A wave of prosperity is sweeping over the world and this Dominion as a food and clothing producer is being carried on the crest of that prosperity. This must have its reflection in this district in the higher prices of wool and agricultural products. Therefore the surplus money in circulation calls for careful consideration as an investment. Lavish expenditure and careless handling will not secure for present holders of money any insurance against inevitable reaction. The issue for £10,000,000 will complete the Government’s war commitments for the present and it is generally recognised that the present method of raising finance, is the fairest and most equitable, way of ensuring that every section of the community shoulders its responsibility. There can be no excuse for apathy on the part of anyone, who has the necessary finance; all must be active partners in supplying the needs of the forces and backing to the utmost the gallant and courageous efforts of our Ne.w Zealand sailors, soldiers and airmen. There are countless ways in which every person can ensure a contribution —even the modest sum of £10 —to the loan, by restricting expenditure on unnecessary luxuries and by an inflexible resolve to economise in every way possible. Our fighting men are risking all that they hold dear in this world and surely those who are enjoying their freedom in the grandest country in the world can assist the cause of liberty by their subscriptions to the loan. Lenders are assured of gilt-edged security and posterity will reap the wisdom of those who have assisted the war effort. We are asked to make this final appeal to assist the local as well as the Southland loan committee and would ask non-subscribers to give the matter their most earnest consideration. There, are only two days left in which to make application. Subscribe £lO or more to the second Liberty Loan. Isn’t your liberty worth it!
