HEAD OF LAKE

(Our Own Correspondent) On Friday afternoon, 22nd Tilt., parents, pupils and friends met at the Earnslaw Hotel to bid farewell to Miss Irene Young who, for two years,

has been sole teacher at Glenorchy school. Mr S. C. .Knowles, chairman of the Glenorchy school commitee, expressed regret at Miss Young’s departure and presented her with a sum of money from Head of Lake friends as tangible evidence of appreciation and wished her all success at her new school, which is at Akaroa. Miss Young briefly returned thanks. Afternoon tea was supplied by the ladies present.

A combined dance and "Bring and Buy Sale’’ was held on Saturday 23rd ult. the proceeds of which were to help swell the funds for the building of a new hall. Supplies of vegetables, fruit, jam, eggs, cream and cakes were

disposed of in a very short time and the satisfactory sum of £ls realised. Dancing was enjoyed till midnight to music supplied by mesdames D. Scott and S. Knowles and Mr T. Bryant carried out the duties of M.C.

On Saturday (sth inst., Colonel Mackenzie, group director of the Homo Guard, accompanied by Captain Tcmpero (Cromwell), and several members of the Queenstown unit journeyed to Glenorchy by launch to pay an official visit to the Home Guard here. Instruction in the use of the bayonet was given by Scrgt. Keen and Commander Lonsdale and rifle practice was under the supervision of Commander Miller. Bomb-throwing was also practiced. At the conclusion of .manoeuvres the platoon marched to the Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial where Colonel Mackenzie addressed the men and complimented them on the very satisfactory manner in which all manoeuvres had been carried out. Colonel Mackenzie said he felt proud of the Glenorchy Home Guard and was’pleased to know that the men took their duties seriously and with enthusiasm, some coming long distances to attend parades. He expressed the hope that Glenorchy and Queenstown platoons might be able to have a field day together. Capt. Tempero also expressed his satisfaction with the Glenorchy unit and offered some helpful suggestions. Before embarking on the return journey the visitors and homeguardsmen were entertained at afternoon tea by some of the ladies. Colonel Mackenzie expressed the thanks Of his party for this much appreciated hospitaliay.

A well attended dance was held in the evening in aid of patriotic funds. The usual local musicians kindly supplied the music and Mr R. McNcijiy was M.C. The prizes in a guessing com-' petition were ulbs of tea donated by Mrs A. Reid and a fruit cake baked and decorated by Miss Beta Groves. Mr J. O’Callaghan and Mrs J. A. Reid were the winners. The half cords of firewood donated by Mr T. E. Bryant were disposed of to Mr P. Sharpe. , The September meeting of the Glenorchy branch of the W.D.F.U. was held in the Earuslaw Hotel on Friday last.. Mrs K. Scott presided over a fair attendance of members. Proceedings opened with the reading of the creed, after which the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The roll call “A humourous story” proved very entertaining. In the competition "Authors of well known sayings” Mrs D. Scott was successful and in the General Knowledge competition Miss A. Scott was the winner. It was agreed to give £1 I/- to the Leper Fund. Money was also allocated for the purchase of parcels to be sent to soldiers overseas. Arrangements for the birthday party to be held next month were discussed. A dainty afternoon tea was served by Mrs S. C. Knowles. Personal.

Mr and Mrs Geo. Reid hjjjve been visiting Invercargill. Mrs A. Sutherland and her daughter recently returned from a holiday in Dunedin.

Miss Joan Knowles spent the school vacation with her parents, Mr and Mrs Knowles, at the Earnslaw HotelMr Reg. Olvcr has taken up duties as sole teacher at Glcnorchy school. Mrs T. E. Bryant is spending a holiday in Invercargill. Mrs A. Reid, Arcadia, has been visiting members of her family in Southland and Dunedin.
