Lake Wakatip Mail QUEENSTOWN. TUESDAY SEPT. 5 1939
A severe earthquake was felt in Queenstown at about 1.50 a.m. on Fridav last. On and after Wednesday (tomorrow) evening' no petrol will be available for private car owners. Petrol will only be available for commercial services from now onwards under license. This isi a war measure. At a meeting’ of the Wakatipu Football Sub-Union last evening- in Arrow tow ii, it was decided to cancel alt further matches for this season, on account of the restriction put on petrol. A progressive euchre and dance under the auspiccv* ol the Country Princess was held in the Arthurs Point school on Wednesday evening' last. There was a good attendance at the function. The Band a short; program of Bin- ic outside prior to the commencement. The prizes wore won by Mrs J. Chalmers' (lady) and Mr A. Deer (gent). The consolation prizes went to Mists June Dagg and Mr Jan Morrison. After supper a dance was arranged the music for which was supplied by Mr Lloyd and Missi M. Bagno.
On Monday 38 ult. an informal farewell gathering* in honour of Mr T. M. Brooks* was- held In the Borough, Council Chambers. Speaking on behalf of those present Dr Anderson expressed the general regret which, was felt in the town when it became, known that Air Brooks had been transferred to Tailrapc. In pirosanting the guest of honour with an Ever,sharp pencil he said Aft* Birooks wa«i highly esteemed by all. Several? other speakers, testified to Air Brooks’ excellent qualities.
