SOME EYESORES IN' THE TOWN.

(To the Editor). ; Sir,—When reading jour paper last week I noticed a letter complaining about the large pool of water lying in the centre of the shelter at the Government wharf when *ome ‘IOO visitors arrived by the excursion boat on Sunday. Personall, I think that is only one of many complaints to be made about .this place. Queenstown is advertised far and wide as a “Government Touiist Resort” and consequently should be kept up to date in every possible way, instead of being neglected as it is at present Queenstown is a naturally beautiful place, blessed with a wonderful climate, but the authorities seem to think that nothing else is necessary to keep It attractive. The first impression when arriving at the wharf after being forced to stand for over two hours, crashed into a crowd of 120 people on an old tub of a boat called the “Ben Lomond,” is one of disappointment. First impressions count with the majority of people, and the dirty unpainted tumble-down condition of all except one of the buildings surrounding the wharf is certain* ly, to say the least of it, unfavourable. After leaving the boat and entering the shelter-shed, one cannot help noticing all the untidy rubbish lying about under the broken down seats, so to walk into a large pool of water as well is quite in keeping with the rest of things. When walking near the Post Office, the next thing to strike one unfavourably, is the stench coming from the filthy drain, (or is it call* ed a creek?), that runs through the town to the Park and Into the lake very near to the bathing-sheds. This creek is an absolute disgrace, yet it could be very easily made into a thing of beauty and a great asset to the town. Isn’t this a matter for your City Pathere to attend to? Another thing, could be pardoned for expecting, when arriving here by motor, and surely but a trifling' thing—a safe approach by road. The road from 'Battery HEP to Queenstown is an absolute deathtrap as has been constantly proved during the last twelve months, by the fact that no less than 17 cars have been forced over the when trying to pass or allowing another vehicle to pass. The road appears to be wide and quite safe, but the gravel constantly thrown to the side by the grader, is only supported by undergrowth, and naturally gives way when the weight of a car is on it. In many places, too, the outside of the road is undermined with rabbit holes, making it absolutely unsafe. Up to the present time no one has* been killed, but several people have spent their holiday in the Frankton hospital instead of in Queenstown, so surely it is time the authorities woke up and did something about this serious matter. It is a shame to think that Queenstown is getting such a bad reputation simply through absolute negligence. Thanking you, Mr Editor, for your valuable space.—l am, etc., A DUNEDIN VISPTOE.
