SCHEELITE INDUSTRY
We are informed that, with the. I present high price of scheelite and definite indications for high market prices for years to come owing to heavy armament programmes, both in the British Isles and America, plans are well under way for the exploitation of the scheelite field at cdenorchy. It is time that something of this nature was done, as in the past investors have given very little con- ' sideration to the vast resources ■! awaiting development. At present, the price per ton of this mineral is approximately £340 in New Zealand, 1 and it seems likely_ that this industry will become a decided asset to the district. With memories of the prosI perous gold-digging days, local resi- ‘ dents will be able to realise ]ust : how the district would benefit from i an extensive development of the industry. Although the mineral is used | extensively for hardening steels used in armament programmes, it neverthe- | less has a fairly large domestic use, and it should be in demand even in normal times, except for an absolute slump in the metal markets which is not imminent at present. People already fortunate enough to bo interested in this product in the past have made fortunes out of it. and it is to be hoped that the new venture will not only benefit - the district, but be an asset to New Zealand as a whole.
