ARROW BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting' of the Arrow Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening last. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. H. James), Crs J. Jenkins, G. Scoles, G. H. Hansen, A. B. Hamilton, and T. Johnston. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence was approved and inward received. Inward Correspondence. O. J. W. Beed wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the Coun-cil.—-The resignation was accepted with regret. , , , , Cr. A. B. Hamilton also tendered his resignation, as he was leaving the district. —In moving that the resignation be accepted with regret, the Mayor said he was sorry that Or. Hamilton was leaving, as he had been a most attentive councillor during his short term of office. He wished him every success in his new appointment. The clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to fill the two vacancies. C. H. McKay, solicitor, Queenstown, tvro'te stating that he had received a letter from the District Public Trustee to the effect that an offer of £BO had been received for the leasehold property in the Borough Extension, at present owned by the estate of

the late William Jaimes Henderson, and the Council was asked if it would consent to the transfer of the lease'. —Agreed to consent to transfer of the lease. H. E. Kimble, secretary, Invercargill Clerks’ and Office Assistants’ Union of Workers, wrote acknowledging receipt of Council’s letter of 9th July, wherein it was stated that the Council was prepared to offer a salary of 30s per week to the town clerk. Writer stated that the matter had been gone into fully, and aio other decision could be arrived at than that the basic wage of 36s per week be paid the clerk as from Ist January, 1937. The Council was asked to realise that the basic wage is a Government 'measure, and for that reason was inserted in all awards. i The secretary, Southland Employers’ Association, avrote on the same subject, stating that, after discussing the matter with Mr Kimble, he could see no escape from the basic wage being paid, although it was recognised that it was only part-time duties.—lt Avas decided that the basic wage of 36s per week be paid the clerk. S. C. Well®, health inspector, Alexandra, fonvarded his monthly reEeceived. J. D. Watt, Public Works Engineer, Alexandra, forwarded notice of irrigation charges in respect of sections 1 to 15, block 30, Borough Extension.for season 1937-38.— 1 The clerk Avas instructed to fonvard the notices to the lessees of the sections, Messrs G. H. Romans and R. W. Mutter. The Commissioner of Transport forwarded figures of road casualties for the four months and a-half ended July 31st, and asked that the Council should co-operate in a campaign to decrease the number of accidents by exhibiting suitable posters Avliich Avould be supplied—lt was agreed to do this. The lion- secretary, Dunedin Health Camp Central Council, Avrote stating that investigations Avere being made regarding the selection of a suitable site for the establishment of a permanent health camp, and the Council was asked for information as to a suitable location in ■ the district.—To bo informed that the Council considered that the vicinity of Lake Hayes Avould be suitable for the purpose. IMPROVEMENTS TO WATER SUPPLY. Mandeno, Lee and BroAvn, consulting engineers, Auckland, AA r rote in reply to the Council’s inquiry as to what progress had been made in regard to the Avator improvement scheme. Writers stated that the Council Avould have already received advice that the pipes supplied by John Burns and Co., Christchurch, Avere landing ex s.s. Essex, and these would have no doubt reached ArroAvtoAvn. Messrs Loavcu Bros, had the contract for laying the pipes, and there Avas no reason Avhy this Avork should not be proceeded Avith. Regarding the reservoir and screen the contractors (the N.Z. Steel and Iron Co., Auckland), advised that they have this well advanced, and will be ready for shipment in two Aveeks. It Avould be .necessary that 'foundations! should be excavated, and bed® prepared to receive these tanks, and a drawing shoAving what Avas necessary, was enclosed. Writers suggested that the Council undertake the excavation of reservoir site by day labour, using registered unemployed 'men in accordance Avith the agreement arrived at with the Labour Department— Mandeno, Lee, and BroAvn to be informed that the Council Avould prefer that the excavation work should be carried out under the supervision of the contractors. It Avas reported that the’ first load of pipes had been delivered in ArrowtoAvn that day. Accounts.—Accounts amounting ta £55 5s 8d Avere passed for payment.
