TREASURE SEARCH IN ITALY
Search for a treasure of gold coins and jewels said to have been hidden nearly 15 centuries ago to preserve them from falling into the rapacious hands oh Jttila, King of the Huns, ■during his invasion of Northern Italy, 'is going on at Levcda di Piave, near Treviso. . . A Latin document in the parish archives of Levcda states that in the ■year 453 a.d. the inhabitants of the (place buried their treasures at a spot situated some 500 yds from the church. Labourers constructing a new road 'came upon some ancient gold coins and, continuing their digging operations, struck, at a depth of about five ■or six feet, some marble steps and what appeared to be a subterranean chamber or vault. As it is hoped that this chance discovery may result in the location of ■the spot where, according to the old document, the treasure was buried, digging is now being continued under the ■supervision of arcluoologists and the local authorities. Between 650 and G53 a.d. Ittila ravaged the north of Italy and ex'louded his invasion to the gates of ■Rome, afterward returning to his own Uom’uions iu what later became known as Hungary. The chance discovery of ■workmen may, it is hoped, lead to a (discovery of the highest historic interest.
