SCHOOL FOOTBALL. On Friday, 16th July, the Convent and Queenstown A met on the local grounds. Neither team had been defeated. The game AA'as keen and fast with effective passing rushes on both side®. It Avas refreshing to see some of the moves. The Convent fielded the speedier team and ran out Avinners by 12 to 3s* The Public School Team Avas not disgraced and the game Avas keenly fought right to the "end. Tries Avere scored for Convent by Pat MoSoriley, Les Me Felin ’and Arnold McAuliffe, the latter’s try being a gem after a determined diA’e for the line at the corner flag. Last Friday QueenstoAvn Convent travelled to ArroAvtown and defeated both ArrowtOAvn and ArroAvtoAvn Convent. QueenstoAvn Public also played ArroAvtoAvn and drew Avith them, each scoring one try. The ArroAV boy® played a strong game and Avere heavier than the visitors. OoAvie especially of the Arrow team and also Scott played outstanding games'. QueenstoAvn Public defeated Arrow ArroAV Convent by 12 to nil. Messrs L. Hanrahan and A. B. Hamilton refereed the games. After the seven-a-side games, tAvo fifteens Avere picked and a trial game took place the object being to select a Wakatipu team to play Northern. This match Avill eventuate later.

Next Friday the Queenstown schools combine to play Arrow combined for the Jopp Cup. The game will be played at Queenstown.

In one of the most thrilling games of Rugby iu recent years, Southland on .Saturday last in Dunedin, recaptured the Ranfurly Shield from Otago. .Southland’s lead, 12 —7, was a good indication of the strength of the teams. Carisbrook ground was packed as it has never been before. It is estimated that 35,000 people were present when the match commenced. The gate takings were slightly over £2OOO. The Springboks defeated Taranaki on Saturday by 17 to 3. Team work, positional play and sure handling gave the South Africans their victory. Queenstown and Arrowtown meet next Saturday on the local ground, —both Seniors and B grade.
